Vicki Barnett
Honored: 2007
Mayor
Farmington Hills
Barnett, 53, was elected to the Farmington Hills City
Council in 1995 and elected mayor in 2003. A financial
planner specializing in retirement planning in her “day
job,” she pushed for Farmington Hills to adopt a citywide
economic master plan for “future redevelopment and
sustainability,” which she says is the first of its kind in
the country. The plan encourages mixed-use developments and
increased density on already-busy commercial corridors to
create a tax base to reduce the burden on home owners. As
president of the Michigan Municipal League, Barnett is
championing plans to create an economic union of Great Lakes
states in a kind of “North Coast” to bolster the regional
economy.
Boards: President, Michigan Municipal League;
advisory board, National League of Cities, Michigan State
Boundary Commission.
Education: Bachelor’s and MBA, University of Michigan
Dearborn.
